As someone who used MS products since the early 80's, there was a definite change in the company in the early to mid-90's. When customers became consumers, ownership became licensing, licensing became per CPU and subscription, and DRM schemes like "activation" became the norm, MS went from being a well-meaning, second-rate software house to the rabid marketing juggernaut (that happens to sell software) that it is today. It's actually a little sad when you think what could have happened with a different management/vision.
